Jornal Opção: Rosa Berardo will have an exhibition with two unpublished films and one restored
16 de November de 2021Three short films talk about the dictatorship and address important aspects for society
The show Rosa Berardo: Chance, Dictatorship and Memories, which takes place this Tuesday (28) at 7 pm at the Cine Lumière Bougainville, features two new short films: False Alarm and Marks of Dictatorship in the Life of an Actor, directed by Rosa Berardo , one of the most renowned Brazilian filmmakers. The exhibition will also show a restored version of the film André Louco, an adaptation of the work of Bernardo Élis, awarded in Switzerland and which marked the resumption of cinema in Goiás in the early 90s.
“We bring together films that talk about very important aspects for a society and that mark the destiny of a people or a person”, says the filmmaker, who adds: “These aspects, sometimes, go through the current social and political order in society; other times, for seconds or minutes we take to reflect and change our choices or opinions about our destiny.”
Rosa was in her youth, between the ages of 18 and 22, when the military government was installed. At the time, she was studying Journalism at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), and experienced the repression, the censorship that controlled any movement, reading and content that was taught. And she, who understood this state of repression, knows the need to revisit the issue among young people who did not live in this military period, but who will assume future consequences of this current government.
The filmmaker emphasizes that memory, through cinema, can be an instrument for us not to let the many rights already conquered go back. There are those who deny the existence of the dictatorship, just as there are those who say that no one died in concentration camps in Germany. And, so that it doesn’t fall by the wayside, the short films are a true record of those who lived and suffered the repressions of the time – so that they don’t just become history. For Rosa, cinema has a capacity to seduce and immerse the viewer, and, if instigated, it promotes good reflections.
‘Alarme Falso’
Made in 2017, the short film Alarme Falso, written by Carlos Moreli and directed by Rosa Berardo, shows, in a light but profound way, how the decisions and choices we make in our lives can irreparably transform our destiny. Is waiting six minutes to finish baking the carrot cake an important enough decision for Estela and Lucas’ relationship to end? Or for the death of a woman? This is one of the dilemmas of the film, which features Bela Carrijo, Gustavo Duque, Priscilla Borges, Adriana Brito and Joyce Linch.
‘Marcas da Ditadura na Vida de um Ator’
Made in 2017 – with screenplay, photography direction and general direction by Rosa Berardo – the documentary Marcas da Ditadura na Vida de um Actor brings to light a political fact, of profound gravity, which involved the life of Goiás actor Almir de Amorim , victim of the Brazilian military dictatorship. For those who defend the return of the military, this documentary is essential for a deep reflection on the subject.
‘André Louco’
Recorded in 1990, adapted from the work of the Goiás writer Bernardo Élis, with a script and direction by Rosa Berardo, the short film André Louco was made in 35mm film, and is considered the film of the resumption of cinema in Goiás. It was also the first film made by a woman in Goiás. The narrative deals with the story of André, a young man considered crazy by the population, and shows the city’s point of view in relation to normality and madness. After being remastered and digitized, André Louco, played by actor Toni Cotrin, returns to the screen in the Rosa Berardo show.
Discussion
“We are going to talk about the impact of these accidents, memories, the dictatorship and psychiatry. The experience of real and fictional characters will lead us on a path of no return, in which we will make reflections capable of changing our points of view about the ordinary, the orderly, order and disorder in this great chaos…”, explains the filmmaker. This invitation to reflection will also be the theme of a round table that will take place right after the screening of the films.
Among the debaters will be Tânia Montoro, PhD in Film from the University of Barcelona and Professor of Film at the National University of Brasília (UNB), and Maria Luiza Mendonça, Professor of Film and Communication at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). Mediation will be done by multimedia artist and professor at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) Edgar Franco.
